DEACONS

The PCUSA book of order states:  “The ministry of deacon as set forth in scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone is distress.  Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, sincere compassion, and sound judgment should be chosen for this ministry.”

Our church is served by a board of 11 deacons who serve rotating three-year terms.  They meet monthly.  Deacons work to shepherd our own members by regular contact with all as well as special care when a member is in physical or spiritual need.  The deacons also help community members who are in need through the provision of benevolence funds to pay bills, rent, transportation needs, medical bills, etc.  Each year 100 or more Thanksgiving baskets are given out.  Deacons, together with Presbyterian Women, hold two rummage sales each year to raise funds to support their ministry goals.  Deacons also send college and military care packages, participate in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Team, Assist with Operation Backpack and help with community programs such as Soup for Souls which is a ministry of the Methodist Church.

Each month there is a “Deacon of the Month” who is responsible to help with the worship service and communion.  Deacons are also responsible for the Quiet Bags which children use during the worship service.  Acolytes are prepared to light candles before the service and to carry the light of God out of the Sanctuary after the service.

Anyone interested in knowing more about the opportunity to serve as a Deacon or to volunteer to help with any of their activities is encouraged to call the church office at 574-583-5787.
